Viva Pictures is pleased to share its recent acquisition of “Scarygirl”, a feature-length animated film inspired by the popular graphic novels and merchandise. Boasting a unique style and captivating storytelling, the film is a “coming-of-age” project that aims to appeal to family audiences.
A collaborative co-production between Like A Photon Creative and Highly Spirited, the feature is executive produced by Kung Fu Panda director John Stevenson.
“I loved Nathan Jurevicius’ Scarygirl” John Stevenson said. “It is a bold and totally original invention… conceived in Nathan’s uniquely brilliant art style. It was a wonderful challenge to translate Nathan’s beautiful paintings into an animated film, telling a complex fantasy story full of crazy adventures and memorable characters in a distinctive visual style. Totally original, breathtakingly funny, heartwarming, mysterious, and exciting, Scarygirl is an animated film like no other.”
“The acquisition of ‘Scarygirl’ is a landmark moment for Viva Pictures as we expand our portfolio with innovative, visually spectacular stories that resonate with global audiences. ‘Scarygirl’ is more than a film; it’s a captivating adventure with emotional depth, appealing broadly to its primary audience of kids and families alike,” Laura Prieto, VP Acquisitions at Viva Pictures noted.
“We are very excited to partner with Viva Kids on this theatrical release. They have been indispensable partners when it comes to supporting independent animation titles,” said Tania Pinto Da Cunha, Partner / VP International Sales, Pink Parrot.
Taking place on an uninhabited peninsula, the film features Arkie, an intelligent, tech-savvy girl with arms like tentacles. She was raised in seclusion by her father, Blister- an incredibly unique octopus that can regenerate life. The pair face difficulty as the sunlight in their home begins to diminish, leading Arkie to try and amend the problem. But in doing so, she accidentally reveals their home to the world, igniting an exciting mission in the City of Light.
Directed by Ricard Cussó and co-directed by Tania Vincent, the film is produced by a production team led by Sophie Byrne (Highly Spirited) and Kristen Souvlis, Nadine Bates, and Ryan Greaves (Like A Photon Creative).
