Get ready to snap your fingers! Charles Addams’ The Addams Family is back on the big screen in their first animated feature. Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan (both from Sausage Party) direct, with a voice cast including Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Bette Midler, Allison Janney, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard and Nick Kroll. MGM releases the United Artists film on October 11th. Our first look was just dropped this morning:
The Addams Family were created in 1938 as a long running series of panel cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Charles Addams. The Addams Family has traditionally included Gomez and Morticia Addams, their children Wednesday and Pugsley, close family members Uncle Fester and Grandmama, their butler Lurch, the disembodied hand Thing, and Gomez’s Cousin Itt. In 1964, a live-action television series, starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones, premiered on ABC and subsequently inspired a 1977 made-for-television movie.
A Hanna-Barbera animated series based on the New Yorker cartoons aired on NBC in 1973, and new episodes were also created for ABC Saturday morning in 1992. The live action franchise was revived in the 1990s with the Paramount features The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993). There was also a 1998 direct-to-video film starring Tim Curry and Daryl Hannah, and a spin-off live-action television series (1998–1999). A decade later, a live musical adaptation featuring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth opened on Broadway and was nominated for two Tony Awards.
