40 years from the masterpiece that is The Castle of Cagliostro, Lupin III returns in an all new theatrical feature from TMS. Under the directon of one of the leading VFX artists in Japan, Takashi Yamazaki (STAND BY ME Doraemon, Dragon Quest Your Story), it will be the first Lupin film in 23 years, and the first in the franchise to be animated in 3DCG. Gkids will release to select cinemas nationwide for two nights only, on October 18th and 21st. Fans can also anticipate the film arriving to home entertainment platforms later this year, with a date to be announced shortly. Here’s the English-dubbed trailer:
This brand-new origin story follows Lupin’s adventure to uncover the secrets of the Bresson Diary and the legacy of his famous grandfather. Longtime fans will appreciate the fidelity of the 3D designs and character animation to the classic 2D originals, while the story is designed to introduce new viewers to the world of Lupin III and its beloved cast of characters, including Fujiko, Goemon, Inspector Zenigata and more. GKids will release Lupin III: The First later this year.

First published in “Manga Action” in 1967, Lupin III and his friends’ adventures as drawn by original creator Monkey Punch quickly grew in popularity. First airing in 1971, LUPIN III Part 1, followed by LUPIN III Part 2 in 1977, the cool, mischievous and hilarious “Red Jacket” Lupin won over the hearts of millions, cementing his popularity.
These TV series were followed by the series’ first film, LUPIN III: The Mystery of Mamo (1978), and LUPIN III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) the first feature film from acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki, with many other works to follow that remain cherished to this day.
