Scarlet

Mamoru Hosoda’s latest film Scarlet has dropped on several streaming platforms and is set for a Blu-ray release on May 19th. The film was released theatrically in the United States on February 6 and has since been nominated in the 2026 Annie Awards.

With inspiration from Shakespeare’s Hamlet woven into the very setting of 16th century Denmark, a tale of betrayal and vengeance is captured by director Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu, the legendary artistic pairing responsible for the Ghibli-like Wolf Children of 2012. A gritty and viscerally disgusting realm is depicted in this latest title, with Mana Ashida voicing our titular lead Scarlet in all her harrowing, righteous fury through the dark, nauseating, and terrifying Otherworld.

With this recent announcement, Sony additionally released a preview of the first 10 minutes of Scarlet. The preview introduces viewers to our protagonist’s unique fate as it sets up her beginning and end with an exceptionally high-quality hybrid animation style mixing 2D and 3DCG.
