On Thursday, I attended a very lively New York Comic Con 2024 panel featuring the executive producers and voice talent of Adult Swim’s long-running animated comedy series Rick and Morty. During the presentation, moderated by Collider’s Perri Nemiroff, executive producer Dan Harmon announced that there will be two additional seasons, No. 11 and No. 12.
Season 8 is coming in 2025. An animatic clip debuted to the crowd, and EP Scott Marder explained they’re hard at work completing that season, while also putting together on Season 9 and being “almost done writing the first pass of Season 10.” Back in 2018, “Rick and Morty” received a stunning 70-episode order. So the latest renewal kind of surprised star Chris Parnell (the voice of Jerry): “Why only two?”
Still, the cast and crew are thrilled with the continued success of the show. “It’s been so cool to see it grow through the eyes of Comic-Con,” said Sarah Chalke, who voices Beth. She teased that in Season 8, she “got to do another version” of her character. Spencer Grammer also revealed that in the upcoming season you’ll get to experience “a different side we haven’t yet seen of Summer.” Parnell previewed an episode that has “something to do with a certain holiday” that doesn’t get much of a focus on television.
Harmon addressed coming-up with fresh storylines while also keeping the core of the show intact, “Sometimes the challenge is a less is more mindset.” Marder believes the title characters are evolving, “They’re becoming more Cheech and Chong-like silly buddies.”
As for Rick and Morty, it’s their voice actors who are some of the newest members of the team. Chalke was “floored” the first time she heard Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden do the voices. Belden called this new journey in his life and career “humbling” and has already had many people come-up to him and say that “Rick and Morty is my comfort show.” Cardoni said, “It’s really special to get the face-to-face interaction” at events like NYCC. And he’s “excited to share some other new versions of Rick.” Grammer said these guys, “are my best friends. We play Magic: The Gathering.”
And speaking of gatherings, this was definitely an energetic one at the Main Stage of the Javits Center, with many fans yelling out their admiration for the “Rick and Morty” gang and hoping for spinoffs, returning characters and that the show lasts forever. Stay tuned for more NYCC 2024 coverage.
