Where most fairy tales end, this one begins.

In a medieval land of elves, dwarves, dragons, and other supernatural beings, a band of heroes has defeated the Demon King. What happens after the quest? The heroes age. Some die.

Frieren, an immortal elf mage, begins a new journey to understand friendship, mortality, and the passage of time.  She is joined by Fern, a young apprentice mage, and Stark, a reluctant warrior. Together they travel through the kingdoms, demon-busting along the way.  Their destination: Aureole, the resting place of souls, where Frieren hopes to pay her last respects to Himmel the Hero.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End began in April 2020 as a manga written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday. So far, over 35 million copies of the manga have been sold. Madhouse produced an animated version with a 24-episode first season in 2023, and a second season of 10 beginning January 2026, which climaxes with the dramatic Divine Revolte Arc. After a hiatus in both the manga and anime, the story is expected to continue.

Frieren streams internationally on Crunchyroll. The series is rated TV-14 in the United States, indicating it is intended for viewers age 14 and older. This rating reflects fantasy violence, some bloody combat, occasional mild sexual humor, and themes of death and mortality. Despite these elements, the series is generally contemplative and restrained in tone.

On March 4, 2026, I had the pleasure of speaking with the main English-speaking cast. Mallorie Rodak, the voice of Frieren, has accumulated over 250 roles in her career. Among them are Yuki Mori from Space Battleship Yamato 2199, Kajaku from One Piece, Yukino from Fairy Tail, and Koki Terumoto from My Hero Academia.

Jill Harris, the voice of first-class mage Fern, has worked as an actor and director for more than 10 years. You can hear her as Noelle Silva in Black Clover, Suletta Mercury in Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, and Charlotte Pudding in One Piece.

Jordan Dash Cruz [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm9002396/] performs the axe-slinging Stark. His acting credits include Major Charis Kraitze in Space Battleship Yamato 2199, Mini Master Roshi in Dragon Ball Daima, Taiga Tsugeura in Wind Breaker, Emperor Yatsuura in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, and Tierno in Pokémon Masters EX. He has also done assistant directing for Frieren as well as Natsume’s Book of FriendsA Galaxy Next Door, and a slew of other anime projects.

In the following video, they discuss what makes Frieren special, how they prepare for recording sessions, the low-key nature of their performances, and offer a special message for their fans.

Special thanks to Crunchyroll senior publicist Stephanie Wong and her staff.
