On a personal level, he’s known as Vash the Stampede.

Wherever he goes on the desolate planet of No Man’s Land, destruction follows.

But are the disasters really his fault? Is the high bounty placed on his head justified?

To find out, the Bernardelli Insurance Society sends agents Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson on his trail, where they learn there’s more to this quirky, super-lucky gunslinger that meets the eye. He also has an evil twin brother by the name of Millions Knives, who appears to be the real culprit behind the mass mayhem.

Despite his reputation, Vash is actually opposed to killing. So what will he do when he faces Knives in a showdown?

Welcome to the adventure of Trigun. It began as a manga series by Yasuhiro Nightow, serialized in the magazine Monthly Shōnen Captain (published by Tokuma Shoten) from 1995 to 1997, and continued as Trigun Maximum in Young King OURS (published by Shōnen Gahōsha) from 1997 to 2007. Studio Madhouse produced a 26-episode anime series in 1998, followed by the feature film Trigun: Badlands Rumble in 2010.

Years later, Studio Orange rebooted the story, this time with a darker, more serious approach, using a blend of CG and hand-drawn animation. This was released as Trigun Stampede in 2023 with 12 episodes.

In this new continuity, the idealistic Meryl Stryfe (not to be confused with Meryl Streep) is now a reporter working for the Bernardelli News Agency. Her partner is the grizzled, cynical Roberto De Niro (not to be confused with Robert de Niro). Milly Thompson doesn’t team with Meryl until the next season, labeled Trigun Stargaze (a.k.a. “The Final Phase”).

The English dub premiered January 24, 2026, launching another 12-episode season. The finale is scheduled for March 28 in Japan, and April 14 for the English-language dub. All iterations of Trigun are available on Crunchyroll.

Johnny Yong Bosch

From the beginning, Vash has been voiced in English by Johnny Yong Bosch, who first gained recognition as Adam Park—the  second Black Power Ranger—in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. He continued as the Green Power Ranger in Power Rangers Zeo and Power Rangers Turbo. Then he transitioned into voiceover acting with his first role: Vash the Stampede. Since then, he has accrued over 400 credits. Among them: Ichigo Kurosaki in Bleach, Lelouch Lamperouge in Code Geass, Jonathan Joestar in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Giyu Tomioka in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and Sabo in One Piece. Twenty-three years after Trigun: Badlands Rumble, Bosch reprised Vash in Trigun Stampede, and three years after that for Trigun Stargaze in what appears to be the franchise’s end. He’s the only performer from all its versions.

I first interviewed Bosch in 2020, when he had voiced “Nine” in the film, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising. See here.

Sarah Roach

Sarah Roach, the third actress to play Meryl Stryfe, joined the franchise with Trigun Stampede. With a background in musical theater in Texas and New York, she transitioned into voice acting after graduating from Pepperdine University. Her roles include Maki Oze in Fire Force, Wicca in One Piece, Clair Voyance in My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission, Abel Reiss in Attack on Titan, and Lucy Webster in The Ancient Magus Bride. She has surpassed over 102 voiceover credits as of this writing.

To celebrate the 30-year anniversary of Trigun, and in recognition of its finale, Crunchyroll hosted a press junket on March 25. They provided an opportunity for interviews with the stars. Below is my conversation with Sarah Roach and Johnny Yong Bosch, who talk about winning their roles, their acting approach, the significance of their characters, and a special message for the fans.

Trigun (1998), is rated TV-14 for blood and serious injury.

Trigun: Badlands Rumble (2010), the feature film, is rated PG-13, for action violence and suggestive behavior.

Trigun Stampede (2023) and Trigun Stargaze (2026), are rated TV-14, for intense violence, psychological trauma, and destruction.
