Starting November 19, GKIDS will bring director Mamoru Oshii’s classic film Angel’s Egg to North American theatres, marking an exciting return forty years after its initial Japanese debut. The upcoming theatrical release has been restored in 4K, overseen by the director himself.

Angel’s Egg was first released in 1985 on home video. Tokuma Shoten served as both producer and creative collaborator with Mamoru Oshii, who also wrote the feature, and renowned artist Yoshitaka Amano, who had previously worked on Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D. The film pairs Oshi’s philosophies with Amano’s art style, creating a breathtaking hand-drawn fantasy setting.
Ahead of its theatrical run, the 4K restoration of Angel’s Egg has been making its rounds in festivals, first debuting at the Cannes International Film Festival, and additionally appearing at the Fantasia Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, and New York Film Festival.
