Making its way to Blu-ray and home entertainment this July 29th, Romeo’s Blue Skies is set to have an all-new remastered edition of its full 33-episodes released, as confirmed by AnimEigo and its parent company, MediaOCD. Kozo Kusuba directed the 1995 success from Nippon Animation, with a screenplay by Michiru Shimada and character designs by Yoshiharu Sato. The series was adapted from “Die Schwarzen Brüder,” the 1941 Swiss novel also known as “The Black Brothers,” written by Lisa Tetzner.

With its home entertainment debut, Romeo’s Blue Skies will be available to view in widescreen for the first time, doubling as the second release for Ruined Childhood, the new AnimEigo imprint that aims to encapsulate the youth’s more melancholic side.

Previously, Romeo’s Blue Skies never had an English release, as American broadcasters felt that its emotions were too big for their audiences. However, the series went on to air in Italy, Spain, Morocco, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Qatar, Indonesia, South Korea, Bahrain, Iran, and the U.A.E, becoming well-known and admired around the globe.

Aside from its remaster, the Blu-ray also features the series presented in its original 4×3 SD format, including the opening, ending, and TV promos—offering new and returning fans a faithful revisit to the beloved series.

Synopsis

To save his family, young Romeo bravely consigned himself to the dangerous, difficult, and poor-paying job of a chimney sweep. As he strives to survive day by day, he meets and befriends Alfredo, another boy trapped in the lowest rung of society. With the help of the “Black Brothers,” Romeo and Alfredo find themselves longing for a better life as they face their struggles together.
