Fifty years after Riyoko Ikeda’s original story captivated the world of shoujo anime, the highly anticipated anime film adaptation, The Rose of Versailles, will debut exclusively on Netflix starting April 30th. The series’ manga, published by Shueisha in 1972, first appeared in Weekly Margaret and has since been adapted into both a stage production with the Takarazuka Revue theater company and an anime series. Having sold more than twenty million copies worldwide, the manga is considered a major milestone in its genre. As of April 2nd, 2025, the official trailer and key art for The Rose of Versailles have been released.
The Rose of Versailles has been shaped by the creative vision of director Ai Yoshimura, known for Ao Haru Ride and Cheer Boys!!, with screenplay writer Tomoko Komparu, who has previously worked on Uta no Prince-sama, and From Me to You: Kimi ni Todoke, and character designer Mariko Oka, credited for First Love Monster and Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan. In collaboration with Kohta Yamamoto, the composer behind Ooku: The Inner Chambers, Hiroyuki Sawano, acclaimed for his compositions in Attack on Titan, produced music for the film. Japanese singer Ayaka has lent her voice to the film’s theme song, “Versailles,” which she wrote herself. As a long-time enthusiast and cast member of the stage production, Hitomi Kuroki has voiced the narrator. Animation has been provided by the renowned studio MAPPA, the same studio that brought to life Jujutsu Kaisen and In This Corner of the World.
