On December 4, 2024, in New York, NY, the acclaimed producer and distributor behind award-winning animation, GKIDS, unveiled the English dub voice cast and English trailer for The Colors Within, the upcoming studio Science SARU film directed by Naoko Yamada. The English cast includes Libby Rue, known for Alice’s Wonderland Bakery, as Totsuko; Kylie McNeil, known for Belle, as Kimi; and Eddy Lee, known for KPOP the Musical, as Rui. Aside from lending their voices to the characters, the three leads will cover the featured soundtrack songs as English adaptations. The English dub has been produced by GKIDS in collaboration with NYAV Post. The Colors Within is set to premiere around the globe starting on January 24th. In preparation for the release, the film will run an Academy-qualifying preview in Los Angeles starting December 13th at the Laemmle Royal.
In addition to the three leads, the English cast also features Eileen Stevens as Sister Hiyoko, Hinano Kuzukawa as Saku, Eden Harker as Shiho, Maxine Wanderer as Sumika, Lani Minella as Kimi’s Grandmother, Colleen Clinkenbeard as Rui’s Mother, Debi Derryberry as Totsuko’s Moter, Noelle McGrath as Headmistress, Susanne Blakeslee as Sister Juri, with Michael Sinterniklaas as the Video Narrator and Stephanie Sheh as the Ballet Instructor. The Colors Within was part of the official selection at the Annecy International Film Festival, and won the Best Animation Film Award from the Shanghai International Film Festival. The film further went on to be an official selection at this year’s BFI London Film Festival and was the winner of this year’s Animation is Film Festival as well.
The Colors Within has been directed by the highly regarded Naoko Yamada, known for A Silent Voice, Liz and the Blue Bird, and The Heike Story, with animation from studio Science SARU, most recognized for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Inu-Oh, and The Heike Story. Genki Kawamura’s Story inc. is credited for the planning and producing for the film, previously having contributed to Your Name., Weathering With You, and Suzume. Also attributed to the film is writer Reiko Yoshida, praised for Ride Your Wave and Violet Evergarden, and composer Kensuke Ushio, known for his work on Devilman Crybaby and Chainsaw Man.
The film is director Yamada’s second with with studio Science Saru since The Heike Story, which was a significant success. Yamada previously has worked as a key animator on many hit series including The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, and Clannad. She has directed the fan favorite K-On! along with its sequel, in addition to the acclaimed A Silent Voice and Liz and the Blue Bird.
Synopsis
High school student Totsuko can see the ‘colors’ of others, representing bliss, excitement, serenity, and a color she loves the most. One of her classmates, Kimi, has the most beautiful color she’s ever seen. Without any knowledge of how to play, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a shy music lover she met at a used bookstore. As they play music together, they start to form new bonds and experience different emotions. While practicing in a secluded church on a remote island, only time will tell if the students will discover their true ‘colors.’
