San Diego Comic-Con is gearing-up for an At Home edition from July 23-26. Virtual admission is FREE, so for the first time, everyone can watch the special studio presentations of upcoming TV shows, episodes and films.
The first network to announce its Fall 2020 Primetime schedule earlier this year was FOX. And it’s no surprise why, considering it’s the only network of “The Big 4” with animated programming. Several episodes of FOX animation hits have been “in the can” for a while now, with makers of the shows also working on other episodes from home during this time.
FOX re-launched its “Animation Domination” block at last year’s SDCC. The network hadn’t devoted its Sunday night entirely to animation since “American Dad!” aired its final episode on FOX on September 21, 2014. (The show then moved to TBS and began airing new episodes a month later.)
I had the chance to see the “Animation Domination” promotion at SDCC in-person. There were games, giveaways and even a giant ferris wheel and massive posters on the side of a building and a train car. All four of those “AD” shows, along with a recent addition, are coming back to FOX next season and will have panels at SDCC@HOME next month.
According to DEADLINE, veterans of “The Simpsons” (which averaged 2.6 million live viewers last season), Al Jean, Matt Selman, David Silverman, Carolyn Omine and Mike B. Anderson will be joined by moderator Yeardley Smith (the voice of Lisa Simpson). They’ll discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the show’s 32nd Season.
“Bless the Harts” (which averaged 2.2 million live viewers for its 10-episode first season last Fall) will also have a quarantine panel with voice actors Kristen Wiig, Ike Barinholtz, Maya Rudolph, Jillian Bell and Fortune Feimster. Joining them are EPs Andy Bobrow and Oscar winners Phil Lord & Chris Miller.
As of now, “Bob’s Burgers” is coming to the big screen with a new feature film in April 2021. But the series rolls on, and creator Loren Bouchard and his cast (including H. Jon Benjamin and Kristen Schaal) will provide never-before-seen footage of upcoming episodes.’
“Family Guy” moved to 9:30pm on Sundays last season (it was at 9pm for 14 years). It will be on at 9:30 again this season, as the Seth MacFarlane comedy celebrates 350 episodes. MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Mila Kunis, Seth Green and show producers will take part in a virtual table read. They’ll also share favorite series moments and preview the new season.
And “Duncanville”, which aired its first 11 episodes this spring, will have a panel, too. Amy Poehler, Ty Burrell, EPs Mike & Julie Scully and more will debut clips from Season 2, coming in 2021.
Interestingly, a panel has not been announced for “The Great North”, a FOX animated series set to debut in the upcoming TV season. In fact, the network renewed the show for a second season earlier this week. “The Great North” comes from Bouchard (an EP) and features the real-life husband and wife voice duo of Nick Offerman and Megan Mullaly. FOX Entertainment President Michael Thorn calls the series “stellar”, in a statement featured on TheFutonCritic.com.
20th Century Fox Television still produces “American Dad!” (TBS), which will have a “How to Draw Roger” presentation. Newbie “Solar Opposites” (Hulu) and the upcoming Netflix animated series “Hoops” (both 20th Century Fox Television productions) will also have panels at SDCC@HOME. Dates and times will be announced soon.
