Wolfwood 900

What’s a hero without a supporting cast?

In the case of Trigun Stampede, Vash the Stampede needs all the help he can get. After all, the “Humanoid Typhoon” has a $60 billion double-dollar bounty on his head. And an evil brother preparing to exterminate mankind. And a hostile desert world challenging his pacifistic beliefs.

He crosses paths with Nicholas D. Wolfwood, a corrupt priest who carries a massive cross-shaped weapon known as the Punisher. He believes in killing for the sake of saving lives, whereas Vash values every life. Wolfwood is connected to a military religious organization whose purpose contradicts Vash’s beliefs, so while Wolfwood behaves like an ally, the potential for betrayal exists.

Then there’s Millie Thompson, a junior reporter for the Bernardelli News Agency. She joins fellow journalist Meryl Stryfe in the final season, Trigun Stargaze, in tracking down the whereabouts of Vash. Millie is cheerful and optimistic—and armed with an incredibly large stun gun. In this brutal world called No Man’s Land, she needs it!

The English voice of Wolfwood comes from David Matranga, who got bitten by the acting bug at an early age. He trained at the Yale School of Drama, earning a BFA in Musical Theatre and an MFA in Acting. His career has encompassed stage plays, commercials, TV, films and video games. His ADR credits include Shoto Todoroki in My Hero Academia, Bertholdt Hoover in Attack on Titan, X in To Be Hero X, and Ken Masters in Street Fighter 6.

The English voice of Millie Thompson is performed by Alexis Tipton, a veteran voiceover specialist with hundreds of roles spanning anime and video games. Her characters include Reze/Bomb Devil in Chainsaw Man, Kaguya Shinomiya in Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Sister Iris in Fire Force, Kurumi Tokisaki in Date A Live, Kid Trunks/Gotenks in the Dragon Ball franchise, Moka Akashiya in Rosario+Vampire, Ai Haibara in Detective Conan, Mei Hatsume in My Hero Academia, and Reiju Vinsmoke in One Piece. Tipton has expanded her résumé as an ADR director on titles such as Restaurant to Another WorldDragon Goes House-HuntingZenless Zone Zero, and A Couple of Cuckoos.

Remarkably, neither actor auditioned for their roles. According to both performers, ADR director Jeremy Inman cast them based on their prior work—a testament to their reputations within the industry.

On March 25, I spoke with Matranga and Tipton at a press junket sponsored by Crunchyroll, celebrating the 30thanniversary of the Trigun franchise. They comment about the appeal of the show, what their characters mean to them, and the circumstances of their recording sessions. They also have a special message for their fans.

Crunchyroll is currently streaming all the iterations of Trigun, with the final season, Trigun Stargaze, ending March 28 in Japan and April 14 in the U.S. with the English-language dub.
