This January 22nd Cosmic Princess Kaguya! makes its descent to Earth and streams on Netflix. Shingo Yamashita makes his feature-length directorial debut with the release of this film. Prior to this, he did phenomenal work on the Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura opening sequences. Cosmic Princess Kaguya! takes inspiration from The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, reimagining the ancient Japanese tale in a modern light.

The story takes place in a virtual world known as Tsukuyomi, where a live performance with all-new music is unleashed. Yamashita’s signature style can be seen in the clean visuals, expressive pacing, and bold angling. Included in the voice cast are the talented Yuko Natsuyoshi, Anna Nagase, and Saori Hayami, playing Kaguya, Iroha, and Yachiyo respectively.

Producers known for their work in Vocaloid have music featured in the film’s soundtrack. Fans can look forward to hearing songs from ryo, 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot throughout the film.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! has been animated by Studio Colorido and Yamashita’s Studio Chromato, with character designs from Hechima and Akihiro Nagae.

“This is my first full-length original animated film,” Yamashita told Netflix. “I poured into it everything I’ve learned about visual expression, my love for unique characters, and my deep affection for the internet culture that’s continued since the 1990s. It’s a bright, fun film—so please sit back, relax, and enjoy it!”
