Nickelodeon is going all-out for the 20th anniversary year of iconic series Avatar: The Last Airbender. When I was at New York Comic Con on Thursday, NICK held a panel unveiling some new merchandise and collaborations with toy / product companies, which spotlight the show’s beloved characters.

One partnership is with Wizards of the Coast to bring “Avatar” to Magic: The Gathering, beginning Nov. 21. As stated by Vincent Imaoka, Head of Collector Toy Business at Paramount Skydance, “Both franchises are loved.” Chris Mooney, Senior Game Designer for MTG, said it’s “a dream come true for me. I grew up on Avatar and Magic: The Gathering.” He added, “It’s not hard to find game designers who are huge fans of the show.” A double faced Aang card was revealed. The gameplay “represents what you see and feel on the show.”

Jazwares is behind the “Avatar Legends” toys. Jesse Hensley, Manager of Product Design, said, “It’s been a great journey.” He wanted to “make sure the products look good, feel good and are unique”, with “accurate representations of the characters you love.” Product Designer Daniel Partain brought-up a nice “Avatar” memory. He “can still remember watching the original trailer on the old Nickelodeon website.” The figures and costumes, in varying sizes, are very cool.

A 12-inch Momo Squishmallows was also announced. It’s available next summer. Hatsume Miku and Youtooz mash-ups were then shown to the delighted crowd. And in the second half of the panel, Imaoka led a fun 15-question “Avatar” quiz, which most attendees participated in. The 15 people with the most correct answers earned their choice of a special prize from an assortment of figures, POPs and stuffed animals. Everyone got to take home a gorgeous “Avatar” / Magic: The Gathering poster.
