During its panel at Anime NYC, AnimEigo and parent company MediaOCD revealed that they acquired the home media license for A Time Slip of 10,000 Years: Prime Rose from SkySet Entertainment. Adapted from the work of the legendary Osamu Tezuka, the film is set to have an HD Blu-ray release in 2026.
With more than 700 manga and 500 episodes of anime under his belt, including classics such as Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion, Osamu Tezuka has made significant contributions to the Japanese manga and anime industries, earning the nickname “Godfather of Manga.”
As the title suggests, the story is set 10,000 years in the future, when a dangerous being known as Death Mask tears Kujukuri City, Japan, and Dallas away from their present timeline. In this distant era, the cities have been transformed into a cold, merciless battlefield, where it’s the survival of the fittest. Gai Tanbara sets out to free time itself from the tyrant’s control. On his journey he comes across Emiya, a formidable fighter trying to take back her city. The two join forces to face the relentless evils of the broken world head on.
A Time Slip of 10,000 Years: Prime Rose first broadcast on a Japanese TV event for charity, 24-Hour Television: Love Saves Earth. Emiya, who is Prime Rose, has appeared in the Tezuka universe time and time again.
Originally, Tezuka’s manga was serialized from July 1982 to June 1983 in Weekly Shonen Champion. However, the manga wasn’t finished at the time the anime adaptation was proposed, resulting in a new storyline written exclusively for the film.
In the early 80s, there was a lot of demand from fans for manga to include fanservice for female characters. Despite many requests for more fanservice with Prime Rose, Tezuka resisted. The film came out in 1983, depicting Prime Rose just as Tezuka envisioned. Prime Rose later appeared in Astro Boy: Omega Factor.
