Sony Pictures Classics announced that Mamoru Hosoda’s Scarlet will release to North American theatres in early 2026. For audiences outside of North America, Sony Pictures Releasing International is handling distribution. Ahead of its theatrical release, Scarlet will appear at several film festivals, debuting for the first time at the Venice International Film Festival. Scarlet will then premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
Scarlet follows the titular sword-fighting princess as she sets out to avenge the death of her father—only to fail. Consequently, she gets caught in the Otherworld between life and death, where she encounters an idealistic man from the present who shows her a future free of vengeance and hatred. But when she’s faced with her father’s killer once again, forgiveness is hardly an option in her mind. Even if the world could move on, could she?

“As we witness heartbreaking conflicts around the world, I believe that finding love and choosing to live together in unity is what will lead us towards something better. That’s why I want to share this new film with the world—now more than ever,” Mamoru Hosoda commented. “A masterful work from a world class filmmaker,” Sony Pictures Classics remarked.
Under Studio CHIZU, Yuichiro Saito produced Scarlet, with Sony Pictures serving as co-producer and co-financer.
