Co-produced by Studio Ghibli and screening this week at Annecy, the film was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics at Cannes (where it won a special jury prize) – and it now has a U.S. release date: November 18th.

Does it have a shot at the Oscar? Check out the clips below and see why everyone is excited about it:

The feature – which opens in France on June 29th – is a co-production between Ghibli, Wild Bunch, Why Not Productions, Belvision, Arte France Cinema and CN4 Productions. Paris-based Prima Linea is overseeing the animation.

The storyline revolves around a man marooned on a desert island whose attempts to escape on a raft are thwarted by a giant turtle that sinks the makeshift craft. Dudok de Wit co-wrote the screenplay with director and screenwriter Pascale Ferran (Lady Chatterley, Bird People).
